The Truth About DEI: Let’s Clear This Up
There’s been a lot of noise lately about DEI—especially after Target rolled back some of its diversity efforts in response to President Trump’s executive orders cutting federal funding for DEI programs. And let’s be real, whenever DEI comes up, so does the tired argument that it means hiring “unqualified” people. So, let’s set the record straight.
DEI in hiring does not mean lowering standards. It just means making sure qualified candidates—who have historically been overlooked—actually get a fair shot. It’s about equity, not handouts. Because let’s be honest, for a long time, the playing field hasn’t been level.
And DEI isn’t just about race. It benefits women of all backgrounds, veterans, people with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups who bring real value to the workplace but often get passed over due to biases—conscious or not.
At the end of the day, companies still want the best talent. DEI just helps ensure that “best” isn’t limited to the same small group of people who’ve always had easier access to opportunity. It’s about removing barriers, not creating shortcuts.
As these conversations heat up again, here’s what I know: Businesses that truly value diversity will continue to thrive. Diverse teams make better decisions, build stronger brands, and drive more innovation. That’s not politics; it’s facts.

The Angel Reese Effect
Angel Reese is proving that being a dominant force on the court can translate into being a powerhouse in business. Her rise from a standout college athlete to a brand marketing icon is a masterclass in leveraging personality, performance, and presence.
From NIL to Big-Time Brand Deals
At LSU, Reese didn’t just shine—she built a brand. By June 2023, her NIL valuation soared to $1.6 million, making her the highest-valued player in women’s college basketball at the time. With 4.6 million combined social media followers, Reese became a marketing dream, landing deals with Reebok, Beats by Dre, and even Airbnb.
Now, she’s made history as the first female athlete to have a signature McDonald’s meal—the Angel Reese Special. This isn’t just a deal; it’s a moment. It cements her status as a cultural and business force, proving that women’s sports stars can command the same marketing power as their male counterparts.
How Athletes Can Follow Her Playbook
If you’re an athlete looking to build your brand and attract major deals, here’s what you can learn from The Angel Reese Effect:
💡 Be Unapologetically You – Reese’s confidence, style, and authenticity make her stand out. Brands want athletes who know who they are and own it.
📱 Engage Your Audience – Social media isn’t just for highlights. Reese interacts with fans, shares behind-the-scenes moments, and builds community. Consistency and personality go a long way.
🏀 Dominate Your Craft – Performance still matters. NIL deals follow talent. Work on your game, show up when it counts, and let your success fuel your opportunities.
🤝 Align with the Right Brands – Not every deal is a good deal. Reese’s partnerships feel natural because they fit her personality and lifestyle. Choose brands that align with your values.
🚀 Think Long-Term – NIL isn’t just about quick cash; it’s about setting yourself up for success beyond your playing days. Reese is building a brand that will last well beyond her college and pro career.
Your Next Move
Reese’s journey shows that success isn’t just about talent—it’s about strategy. If you’re an athlete or ANYONE looking to take your personal brand to the next level, start now. Audit your social media presence. Define what you stand for. Look for partnerships that align with your goals. And most importantly, be intentional about how you show up both on and off your field of play.
