Can you believe that it’s almost October? Quarter 4 is knocking at the door, friend!
Yesterday was the first day of fall, and while we don’t really have season changes in Houston… I still felt change in the air, and I’m excited. I really don’t know how to explain it, but - it feels like this has been a year of transition. This summer in particular though, is where the most changed for me. It almost didn’t happen, though.
I could have made a decision professionally to stick with something I’d known for almost a decade. Although I knew I needed a change, I was comfortable. Newness can be scary, it’s the unknown aspect that always gets me. But after a lot of tears and a lot of prayer, I made the leap - and it was the best decision I’ve made in a long time.
The thing about seasons is that they all end, and new ones always begin. Trying to hold on to summer vibes in autumn cheats you out of all the greatness the transition can bring.
Have you ever caught yourself thinking about a previous season in your life, wishing that you could get some of it back? I often think back to times in my life when I felt like I was really killing it, and wonder how I can get back to it. But I can’t really go back, and neither can you. If you’ve ever felt like this, I think better questions for self reflection would be:
“How can I take what I learned from that season and elevate it for my current season? How did the old version of me help to develop the current version of me?”
Every season has its purpose, my friend. So let’s take those lessons and build toward our next as we move into the fall.
We got some things to watch and read this weekend, friend!
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with books by Jasmine Guillory. She is the rom-com novel version of Shonda Rhimes, in my opinion. She shared really great writing tips with The Atlantic. Read here.
xoNecole launched their first digital cover featuring none other than the great Issa Rae. Read it here and catch a quote below.
“I wanted to be what I wanted to see on TV; what younger me wanted to see – what I needed to see”
Tyler Perry’s got two new projects available for streaming this weekend: 1) The Notebook-esque film “A Jazzman’s Blues” on Netflix, and 2) the spin-off from BET’s SISTAS, “Zatima”, on BET+.
On The Come Up, the film adaptation of Angie Thomas’ novel of the same name is in theaters and on Paramount+ today.
The Hype, the streetwear design competition show, is back for a second season on HBOMax. The experts gotta redeem themselves after picking the wrong winner. I said what I said.
If you want fall vibes, check out my "Being Mary Jane” playlist. It’s made up of the music from the series, but it reminds me of Autumn. Turn it on while you close out your week and let me know what you think. Spotify | Apple Music
That’s all for this week, friend! Enjoy your first fall weekend!
