The Supreme Court denied a stay request and petition from death row inmate Kenneth Eugene Smith, and the state of Alabama conducted the first-ever execution by Nitrogen to end his life. Smith had previously survived an attempted execution by lethal injection. [More]
Microsoft laid off over 1,900 employees at X-Box and Activision Blizzard this week. Economists believe we’ll continue to see more layoffs like this in the coming weeks. [More]
After massive layoffs disproportionately affecting journalists of color at The LA Times this week, the Latino, Black, AAPI and MENASA Caucuses released a statement. It’s worth the read and a discussion about how the journalism industry is crumbling before our eyes. [More]
Despite a report indicating that 56% of communities of color are near sites that produce carcinogenic waste, a judge ruled against enforcing a Civil Rights Act provision in Louisiana’s “Cancer Alley.” Reason cited: “Pollution doesn’t discriminate.” [More]
A Black high school student in Texas has been on various levels of suspension for months because his locs violate his school district’s dress code. A judge has ordered the case to trial next month to determine if the district is violating the Crown Act by continuing to punish him. [More]
The City of Houston tried to prosecute a woman for helping feed the homeless community. The trial proceedings have been paused, because they can not panel a jury. Too many of them objected to enforcing a $500 fine. [More]
