it all comes together
thoughts on how experiences can shape you + reads & vibes for your weekend.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a super busy week - I’m back from a quick trip to the ATL - so while this newsletter is LATE it’s not denied! Let’s go, friend!
thoughts at large.
It’s always funny when you realize why you had to go through something - or why you had to learn what you did! I’m sure you’ve had a moment of reflection - or an “A ha!” moment that made everything make sense. I had that moment yesterday.
As I shared, I just got back from Atlanta, where I had the opportunity to present to two groups of school leaders who are preparing to launch applications for their schools! I was responsible for applications to the magnet school in my last role - and now - I’m getting the opportunity to share that expertise, and combine it with my comms skills.
All those hours perfecting campaigns helped me to prepare for this. At the time though, it didn’t really feel like a positive. It was a time suck - I cried & I cussed 🤷🏾♀️! But now, I see that I had to learn to help someone else avoid my mistakes.
If you’re in a weird, or uncomfortable place right now, here’s a reminder: it’s a training ground, not a detour or a punishment. Treat it like that.
Ask yourself: What am I supposed to learn from this? What lessons or skills can I take away from this experience that might help me down the line?
You’ll be better for it, I guarantee it.
reads & vibes.
I started watching “Reasonable Doubt” on HULU, starring the stunning Emayatzi Corinealdi, McKinley Freeman, Michael Ealy, and Sean Patrick Thomas. Ten out of Ten, I do recommend. If you were a fan of Scandal (when Pope & Associates was actually handling cases) and Being Mary Jane - this show is definitely in line with that aesthetic. The first two episodes are available now and there will be new episodes each Tuesday. If you watch, let me know what you think.
On Tuesday, 10/4, the Ava Duvernay-produced anthology series, “Cherish The Day” returns to OWN. There’s an all-new love story to explore, and this season features Henry Simmons and Joy Bryant.
The TIME100 Next list has dropped and there are a number of excellent artists that were profiled by their peers. I’d like to call your attention to this one, however, which was written by Queen Latifah, about Keke Palmer. Keke is underrated to me - she’s so talented and deserves all of the flowers!
Well, that’s all for this week, friend. I’ll be on the road again next week, but the newsletter will be in your inbox, ON TIME.
