I got sick for the first time in years - literally - this week. Now that I’m coming out on the other side of that - I had some time to really think and I wanted to share a few thoughts with you, friend. Keep reading.
thoughts at large.
What do you do when your favorite artist (or friend, or family member) stops growing with you?
I was thinking about this while watching the artist formerly known as Kanye West over the last couple of weeks. He went on Faux News and had an unchallenged brain dump. He got himself restricted on Twitter and Instagram. Oh, and then there was the “WLM” t-shirt thing.
While holding space & empathy for his mental health condition, I can no longer excuse the blatant disregard for the community that gave him the freedom to be and do what he does best. It’s a slap in the face.
For me, this isn’t even a question of liberal vs conservatism, because as quiet as it’s kept, many Black people are conservative in ideology - whether they vote that way or not. Now, it’s more so about a guy allowing himself to be used as a pawn in an agenda to invalidate the very valid arguments for the protection of Black lives and the arguments against injustice & structural racism. The same people calling him a hero and a free thinker now, are the same ones that called for him to be canceled after the Katrina telethon.
Quite frankly, I’m tired. And this is where I get off the ride.
You and I both know that we grow at different paces. When someone stops growing though, or - in some cases - regresses… we have to make the decision to protect our peace by walking away. Letting go is tough, especially when someone has played a major role in your life - but time spent is not a reason to hold on to a relationship that’s no longer serving a purpose. Apply that as you see fit, friend.

It’s true that we don’t grow at the same time and you are right it’s time to let go. There’s a few celebrities that I believe need to be ignored so they can retreat and heal.
