Happy Friday! We made it!
thoughts at large.
Nothing deep this week, friend. I just hope you’re well, and that you’re treating yourself well.
I spent the first half of my week at South By Southwest EDU in Austin supporting clients. In between press prep, staffing interviews, and doing digital coverage, I did get the chance to attend a few panels. I was inspired by the number of Black women I met who are out here working to ensure that kids are getting the education they deserve. Since leaving the school district, I’ve been able to take a step back and see how taxing that world can be. Teachers have a hard job, but they do what they do for the love. Watch this week’s episode of Abbott Elementary for reference.
I’ve also realized that there are multiple ways to achieve a goal - my desire to support kids hasn’t changed, I just do it in a different way now - a way that’s healthier and more productive for me. My hope for you this week is that you take a minute to ensure that you’re working in a productive way and that you’re not always sacrificing yourself for the cause.
You deserve. Think about that this weekend.
reads + vibes.
The death of Jamea Harris, the Alabama players involved, and the families torn apart - via ESPN (crazy story. one day we’ll talk about why so many young men lack conflict resolution skills.)
Inside the Cancellation of WNYC’s ‘The Takeaway’ - via Hell Gate NYC (interesting story about why Melissa Harris-Perry’s radio show was canceled, seemingly without cause.)
The Fugee, the Fugitive and the FBI via Bloomberg (How did Pras Michel of The Fugees wind up getting twisted up in one of the biggest financial scandals of the century?)
I meant to share this with you last week but Masego’s new self-titled album is really good. If you like a little trap with your jazz you’ll love it. Listen now via Apple or Spotify
I’m also really feeling this track by BeMyFiasco called U and I - I caught the video on BET Soul and I’ve been into it ever since. It’s not new, I’m late to the party but better late than never. R&B fans, this is for you. Check it on Apple or Spotify
Don’t forget - the Oscars air this Sunday if you’re interested in seeing who wins! The show starts at 8/7c on ABC. I’m watching to see if Angela Bassett will walk away with the statue for Wakanda Forever.
That’s all for this week. Be easy!
