a few thoughts on getting out of your day to day + reads & vibes for your weekend.
Happy Friday, friend! We made it!
thoughts at large.
This week I spent a little time in Atlanta visiting a client for work and honestly - it was just the shake-up I needed to give me some much-needed perspective.
In some ways, I’ve been feeling like I’ve been hitting a wall. Things just haven’t been clicking like I’ve wanted, and if there’s one thing about me - I’m going to do whatever I gotta do to make things right.
So this week, as I watched my clients do what they do in real-time, it reminded me why it’s so important to get out of your comfort zone. If something isn’t working, you can’t expect the situation to change without initiating a change yourself. It doesn’t even have to be a huge shift - it could really be as simple as changing your location.
It's no secret that our surroundings can have a huge impact on our creativity. When we're constantly in the same environment, our brains can become accustomed to it, making it harder for us to come up with fresh ideas. That's why changing your environment can be a great way to shake things up and get a new perspective.
Here are a few reasons why changing your environment is so important for improving creativity:
It can inspire you
When you're in a new environment, you're exposed to new sights, sounds, and experiences. This can be incredibly inspiring and can help you see things in a new way. You might notice things you've never seen before or come up with new ideas based on your surroundings.
It can help you break out of your comfort zone
When you're in a new environment, you're forced to adapt and try new things. This can be uncomfortable at first, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Stepping outside your comfort zone can help you see things from a new perspective and push you to be more creative.
It can help you focus
Sometimes, our environment can be a distraction. Whether it's a noisy office or a cluttered workspace, our surroundings can make it hard to focus. When you change your environment, you can create a space that's tailored to your needs and can help you focus on your work.
So, how can you change your environment? Here are a few ideas:
Take a trip: Whether a weekend getaway or a longer vacation, traveling to a new place can be incredibly inspiring.
Move your workspace: If you usually work from home, try working from a coffee shop or a co-working space. If you work in an office, try moving to a different desk or even a different floor.
Rearrange your space: Even something as simple as rearranging your furniture can help you see your space in a new way.
Remember, changing your environment doesn't have to be a huge, dramatic change. Even small changes can make a big difference in your creativity.
So, if you're feeling stuck in a creative rut, try changing up your environment. Who knows? You might just find the inspiration you've been looking for.

I loved this profile on Savannah James, written by Sylvia Obell, in The Cut. Here’s a quote:
“You can’t depend on someone else for your happiness. You have to be happy. It’s like I said, you can’t be anything to anyone if you’re not everything to yourself first. And that is with anyone when it comes to any relationship — your friends, your parents, your significant other, your kids, anybody.”
Since the evil overlord has taken over Twitter, I’ve been concerned about what would happen to Black Twitter, which is really an entity of its own. The 19th published a piece on the mission to preserve it - and dubbed it the world’s largest group chat.
If you like podcasts, The Read has returned after a hiatus for a special episode (warning: this episode discusses self-harm), and Morgan Debaun, Blavity’s CEO, has a new podcast focused on the personal journey to becoming the woman she is today.
Janelle Monae announced her new album “The Age of Pleasure” and has been shaking the internet up with her…um… clothing choices - or lack thereof. I’ll let you check out her new video “Lipstick Lover” if you’re intrigued. Warning: not safe for work viewing.
KeKe “Keeps A Job” Palmer has released a new movie and corresponding album called BIG BOSS… it tells the story of her journey to stardom. Listen on Spotify or Apple Music. The movie is available from her KeyTv Network here:
You know the TV writers are on strike, right? That means that all of our favorite shows that were in development have come to a halt. And with good reason: the writers want a fair wage in the age of streaming. Here’s an example of what that may mean from P-Valley creator Katori Hall:
I guess we’ll just have to buckle up for the ride!
That’s all for this week friend!
Before we go, I wanted to take a moment to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms, and the mom figures out there. You are invaluable, amazing, and beautiful. What would we do without you?
For those of you who find this weekend tough for whatever reason, I am sending a prayer up for your peace. I hope that you can find a moment of joy over the next few days. XO!
