being a multi-hyphenate.
a few thoughts on having multiple pursuits + reads & vibes for your weekend.
Happy Friday! This week has been a GRIND so I am so excited to see today! Next week, I’m on 4 planes across 3 states. It’s going to be a grind, but it’s going to be FUN!
Let’s dive right in!
thoughts at large.
Back in the day, you may have heard someone tell you that you should focus on one thing, and get really good at that. I don’t embrace that anymore. There are so many examples of people who have embraced their ability to be great in multiple disciplines. I think about people like Teyana Taylor, Issa Rae, KevOnStage, KeKe Palmer and even Chris Brown as examples of modern, successful multi-hyphenates.
There is no reason why you can’t exercise all of your gifts. But how do you make it happen? Keep reading:
1. Embrace Your Unique Identity:
Being a multi-hyphenate means embracing your diverse set of skills and interests. Don't feel pressured to conform to traditional expectations or choose just one path. Celebrate the fact that you can wear multiple hats and bring a unique perspective to the table. Embrace your individuality and let it shine through in everything you do.
2. Define Your Priorities:
With so many passions, it's essential to establish clear priorities. Identify the areas that truly resonate with you and align with your long-term goals. Consider the time and effort each pursuit requires and be realistic about what you can feasibly manage. Setting priorities will help you allocate your resources effectively and prevent burnout.
3. Cultivate Time Management Skills:
Effective time management is a crucial aspect of leading a multi-hyphenate life. Create a schedule that allows you to dedicate meaningful time to each of your pursuits. Prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and consider using productivity tools and techniques to enhance your efficiency. Remember, finding balance is key to maintaining your productivity and avoiding overwhelm.
4. Embrace the Power of Focus:
While it's exciting to have numerous interests, it's important to focus your efforts on each one individually. Avoid the temptation to spread yourself too thin. By dedicating focused periods of time to each endeavor, you'll achieve greater depth and proficiency, leading to more substantial results.
5. Develop a Supportive Network:
Building a network of like-minded individuals who understand and support your multi-hyphenate journey can be incredibly valuable. Connect with others who share your passions, attend relevant events, join online communities, or even start your own mastermind group. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network will inspire you, provide guidance, and open up opportunities for collaboration.
6. Embrace Continuous Learning:
In a world that constantly evolves, staying curious and open to learning is essential. Seek out opportunities to expand your knowledge and skill set in each of your fields of interest. Read books, attend workshops, take online courses, or find mentors who can guide you on your journey. Embrace the joy of learning and be willing to adapt as you grow.
7. Nurture Self-Care Practices:
Leading a multi-hyphenate life can be demanding, so self-care should never be neglected. Take care of your physical and mental well-being by prioritizing sleep, exercise, and healthy eating habits. Incorporate mindfulness practices, such as meditation or journaling, to maintain clarity and reduce stress. Remember, taking care of yourself allows you to show up fully in all areas of your life.
8. Embrace the Power of Synergy:
Discover ways to leverage the synergies between your various passions. Look for connections, commonalities, and opportunities to integrate different areas of interest. By combining your skills and knowledge, you can create unique and innovative projects that stand out from the crowd.
Remember, being a multi-hyphenate is an exciting and rewarding journey. Embrace the possibilities, stay focused, and remain resilient in the face of challenges.
